Sunflower Festival 2017 Citizen of Year and Parade Grand Marshal

Randy ValentineSunFlower

The Mayville Sunflower Festival Committee is proud to announce it’s choice for this year’s festival royalty. It seems that every year we receive more nominees who each have special qualifications to become Citizen of the Year and Grand Parade Marshal. We are all lucky to have so many members of our community who have dedicated their time and efforts to improving our community. Besides the announcement of our Grand Marshal and Citizen of the Year, the Committee would also like to acknowledge runner-ups Violet Matthews and Gale Langford for their contributions to our community.

Grand Marshal

This year’s parade Grand Marshal is Roxann Hiiter. Roxann has run Rock-A- Bye-Baby Daycare from her home in our village for over 24 years. Hundreds of parents are forever grateful to her for the love and care that she has provided over the years. She continues to nurture and shape the development of her little charges, some of which had parents who were also cared for by Roxann.

Roxann’s community involvement has benefited numerous local organizations. She is or has been a member of the Mayville Board of Education, Mayville Village Council, Mayville sunflower Festival, Mayville Downtown Development Authority, Mayville Area Chamber of Commerce, Trustee for her church, and ambulance volunteer. She organizes the park cleanup each year, spearheaded the installation of Disc Golf at Ohmer Park, and supports our library. You can find her at every local parade, ball game, community event, and she approaches every activity with drive, determination, and a willingness to do everything in her power to make the event a success.

Judging by the number of nominations received, the community should be out in record numbers to wish Roxann well during the 2017 Sunflower Festival Parade in her role as Grand Marshal.

Citizen of the Year

The Mayville Sunflower Festival is very excited about this year’s Citizen of the Year, Cindy Coxe. She is the perfect example of someone involved in her local community and whenever approached, Cindy smiles and says, “What can I do to help?”. Cindy’s involvement includes Vice President and member of the Mayville Board of Education, Secretary and member of the VFW Auxiliary, member of the Mayville Area Chamber of Commerce, Lion’s Club, Eastern Star, Mayville Eagles, Mayville Museum, and a member of our own Mayville Sunflower Festival. She initiated the We Can Read Program, assists in the Summer Reading Program at the Mayville Library, and is involved in tutoring programs for our youth.

Her involvement in the Mayville Museum includes coordination of the Easter Egg Hunt for over 600 kids, car show, pancake breakfast, and as a general volunteer. She also wrote a grant which allowed the Museum to refinish the school house. She helps plant flowers downtown and sells “white canes” and “poppies” to help our local service organizations. She even makes the wonderful chicken noodle soup served at the Buck Pole each year.

Please take any opportunity you have to congratulate Cindy for being named Citizen of the Year and to thank her for her involvement and efforts to improve our community.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Randy ValentineVillage News

You will notice new signs popping up around town. A big thank you goes out to the anonymous donor who made them possible.  If you would like one of the signs please go the Village office and request a Neighborhood Watch Sign. We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting, the date and time of which can be found by going to the Village calendar.

Tonight’s meeting was very productive and Chief Coln proved to be a valuable resource while answering questions and providing insight into the wonderful ideas that the group came up with. I would also like to acknowledge Bill and Rayola Barkowska, as well as Lindsay Mertens. If it were not for these dedicated individuals, we would not have a Neighborhood Watch program. I would like to share some neighborhood watch tips from tonight’s meeting, by working together we can help eliminate neighborhood crime. Please watch out for these activities in our neighborhood.

  • Someone running from a car or home
  • Someone screaming.  If you can’t explain the screams, call law enforcement and report them.
  • Someone going door-to-door in the neighborhood or looking into windows and parked cars.
  • Someone asking about past residents
  • Someone who appears to have no purpose wandering through the neighborhood.
  • Unusual or suspicious noises that you cannot explain, such as breaking glass or pounding.
  • Vehicles moving slowly without lights or without an apparent destination.
  • Business transactions conducted from a vehicle. This could involve the sale of drugs or stolen goods.
  • Offers of merchandise available for ridiculously low prices. The merchandise might be stolen.
  • Someone walking or running while carrying property at an unusual time or place
  • Someone removing property from unoccupied residences.
  • A stranger entering a neighbor’s home which appears to be unoccupied.
  • A stranger in a car who stops to talk to a child.
  • A child resisting the advances of an adult.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The Mayville Police Department is looking for candidates for their Reserve Officer Program.
